Dr. TAPAS GURUNG (BHUTAN)

A retired medical professional after serving about 31 years of public services at districts hospital, regional referral hospital and ministry levels. He has clinical expertise of graduate level, managerial and primary health services management experiences at all levels. Now retired for the last one year still abreast of national and regional health events, in good health and spirits.

ACHIEVEMENTS
– Operationalization and management of two 150-bedded regional referral hospitals along with advisory role to the region on primary health care services.

– Program manager of national TV/ARI programs in Department of Public Health.

– Involved in Nutritional baseline studies (Anthropometric) survey for stunting rate study in Bhutan’.

– Involved in Community Based Alcohol control studies in 4 Geogs (blocks) of Mongar.

All above studies were evaluated and rolled out, phase wise in most Districts of Bhutan

– A core member in the “Move For Health Walk -2002” for Bhutan Health Trust Fund in 2002. This walk contributed to the US dollar 18 million as the fund position in 2002 now scaled up and being used to fund purchase of basic drugs and vaccines for Bhutan.

– National Open Tennis Singles Champion in 1993 and Doubles Champion 1992, 1993.

– Now a member of National Committee for Polio Eradication, Measles Elimination, and Rubella/CRS Control.

– Member of Royal Society for Senior Citizen (RSSC) as Health Coordinator for local

EDUCATION
– Masters in Public Health (MPH), Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand [2003-2004]

– Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Patiala Medical College, Punjab, India [1981-1986]

EMPLOYMENT
• 1988-1999: Served various districts as districts medical officer

• 1999-2003: Ministry of Health as managers for various public health programmes

• 2005-2019: Medical Superintendent of Central and Eastern Regional Referral Hospitals

He is proficient in Bhutan’s National language (dzongkha), English, Hindi and Nepali.
